Dean’s office, student conduct office split in reorganization

September 6, 2016

The Division of Student Life is excited to announce a restructuring to better serve students and the campus community. The Dean of Students Office has split into two separate departments: the Dean of Students Office and the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards.

The Dean of Students Office (DOSO) will remain focused on student assistance and advocacy, as well as faculty/staff consultation. The Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards will address nonacademic and academic misconduct.

DOSO exists to support the academic mission of the university and to assist and support students in finding their own unique path to success. DOSO works with students individually on a wide range of student life issues, including academic concerns, interpersonal stresses, mental health issues and crisis situations.

We assist faculty and staff on concerns they are having in regards to student distresses, policies and classroom management, and consult on a variety of topics. We work collaboratively to support student success both inside and outside the classroom.

DOSO offers drop-in services for faculty, staff, students and parents, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Bascom Hall, room 70, and also can be reached via email at dean@studentlife.wisc.edu, phone at 608-263-5700 and our chat service at https://www.students.wisc.edu/doso/.

The Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards (OSCCS) is responsible for enforcing student conduct standards that are found in three chapters of Wisconsin administrative law that apply statewide to all UW campuses and students. These are commonly referred to as UWS 14 (academic misconduct, i.e., cheating on exams and plagiarism), UWS 17 (nonacademic misconduct, i.e., misconduct toward other members of the community, illegal alcohol and drug use, sexual assault, stalking), and UWS 18 (conduct on university lands).

OSCCS upholds every student’s right to learn in a community that is safe, and fosters integrity and accountability. To learn more about the student disciplinary process, consult with a staff member, or report a violation, call 608-263-5700, email dean@studentlife.wisc.edu or visit the website at http://students.wisc.edu/student-conduct.

The Division of Student life comprises nine departments, including: Associated Students of Madison (ASM), Center for Leadership & Involvement, Center for the First-Year Experience, Dean of Students Office, International Student Services, LGBT Campus Center, McBurney Disability Resource Center, Multicultural Student Center, and the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards.
