  • Farewell to five-digit phone dialing

For years, UW-Madison and state Centrex phone users have been able to contact each other by simply dialing a five-digit version of their phone numbers. This dialing process will gradually stop working as campus transitions to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). In preparation for the transition, DoIT encourages all Centrex users to begin dialing:

    • 9 + the seven-digit phone number for calls within your area code
    • 9 + 1 + area code + seven-digit phone number for calls outside your area code

If you dial a five-digit extension from a Centrex line and don’t get through, please redial using the 9 + the seven-digit phone number. All users can dial 911 to make emergency calls.

This change is part of the service conversion from Centrex analog to Cisco VoIP service, affecting about 20,000 UW–Madison phone users. It does not affect those who are already using the Cisco VoIP service.

  • Madison regulates moped parking; review of UW moped rules

The Madison Common Council has passed a new ordinance banning moped parking on sidewalks and terraces – the area between the sidewalk and curb – that takes effect Jan. 1. Mopeds will be treated like motorcycles; they cannot park at or near bicycle parking areas. Only designated on- or off-street stall parking will be allowed. UW-Madison requires a moped parking permit and has designated moped parking areas throughout campus.
Mopeds are treated as vehicles on the UW-Madison campus and cannot park at or near bicycle areas or – for safety reasons – in gated parking garages/ramps. Mopeds cannot be operated on sidewalks, disabled access aisles, bike paths or other restricted areas.

This approval shifts the majority of campus zoning from residential, commercial or manufacturing to “Campus-Institutional (C-I)” zoning. The master plan also allows the university to streamline its local entitlement process, saving six to nine months of development time. Each new university capital project — whether it be a new building, renovation or addition — will take less time and cost less money.
