Flu clinics for UW employees
Flu season can mean misery and time lost from work. To limit the effects of the flu on the campus community, UHS hosts employee flu shot clinics starting Sept. 13. No appointment is needed; see the schedule here or call 608-265-5600. Clinics are not open to spouses/partners or children. Bring your health insurance card. If you have Dean Care, Group Health Cooperative, Physicians Plus or Unity, payment will be processed directly to your health insurance provider. Otherwise, there will be a $31 fee for the shot (payable by cash, check, Visa or MasterCard).

Attend the 'Know Your Numbers' biometric screening
The “Know Your Numbers” free biometric screening is available to employees and their spouses/domestic partners enrolled in the State of Wisconsin group health insurance program as part of the $150 Well Wisconsin incentive. Fasting (8-12 hours prior to the screening) is not required for screening participation, but may provide more accurate results. The screening will measure body mass index, blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol and waist measurement. Events are: Sept. 28 at the College of Engineering; Oct. 4 at Union South; Oct. 6 at the Social Sciences Building; Oct. 13 at Memorial Library; Oct. 18 at Dejope Hall; Oct. 20 at Eagle Heights Community Center; and Oct. 27 at 21 N. 2016 Ironman may affect traffic on Sept. 11
The City of Madison is once again hosting the prestigious Ironman Wisconsin competition — the triathlon takes place on Sunday, Sept. 11, starting with the swimming portion of the competition at 7 a.m. in Lake Monona. Thousands are expected to pack downtown Madison as race participants and spectators — in addition to the large crowds, several campus and downtown streets will be closed or restricted on Sunday to accommodate the biking and running portion of the race. Chancellor Blank: Welcome back to campus
After an eventful summer, Chancellor Rebecca Blank is welcoming employees back to campus and thanking them for their work. Highlights of the summer included the hiring of a new vice chancellor for finance and administration, discussion of ways to make the campus more inclusive and welcoming to all, and anticipation of budget discussions at the state legislature. In addition, UW-Madison had its most successful summer term yet.

UW-Madison budget forum set for Sept. 14
The campus community is invited to be part of a discussion about the state budget and its impact on the University of Wisconsin-Madison in a forum on Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 3:30-5 p.m. at Gordon Dining & Event Center, 770 W. Dayton St. The session will discuss the university’s budget landscape and how it has changed over time, the impact of budget cuts, the UW System 2017-19 budget request, along with how alumni and supporters are being engaged in budget discussions. There also will be ample time for questions and answers, and input.

With holidays on a weekend, day off is a Monday
Plan for an unusual holiday work schedule this year. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day both fall on a weekend, as do New Year’s Eve and Near Year’s Day. As a result, both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are considered floating holidays, and Christmas and New Year’s Day will be observed with days off on Monday, Dec. 26, and Monday, Jan. 2, when offices will be closed.

New consultant added to Employee Assistance Office
An additional consultant has been added to the Employee Assistance Office. Susan Fuszard has been in the employee assistance field for the past 20 years, and her areas of expertise include self-care that incorporates the whole person, stress management, relationship issues, and navigating grief and trauma. In addition to individual counseling, Susan has provided management consultation in support of leaders at all levels. The Employee Assistance Office helps faculty and staff with both their personal and professional lives. To set up a confidential appointment, contact them.

New programs address compensation issues
UW-Madison is launching compensation programs for faculty and staff to recognize outstanding performance, address market issues with peer institutions, and alleviate inequities, administrators announced today.
For 2016-17, UW-Madison is implementing three funding initiatives:
- A block grant for faculty and academic staff in nationally competitive markets, in the categories of performance, market, and equity (similar to last year’s initiative)
- A discretionary compensation fund (DCF) for academic and university staff in the categories of performance, market, and equity (similar to last year’s initiative)
- A performance bonus fund for faculty and staff for exceptional performance (new pilot initiative)

Farmers market returns to Union South Thursday
Starting on Sept. 1, Union South hosts a weekly farmers market every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., through Oct. 27. It features local and organic products from area vendors. The market will feature Farm to Table bags, a new way to connect campus and local farmers. Each bag will contain fresh fruits and vegetables from that week’s harvest along with a recipe card tailored to the produce.
