Flu shot clinic for second and third shift employees
A flu shot clinic for second and third shift UW‒Madison employees will be held on Thursday, Sept. 7, 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., at the Health Sciences Learning Center (HSLC), Room 1222. Free parking will be available in lots 74, 82, 60 and 64. Appointments are not required. Employees should bring their Wiscard and their insurance card. Employees without proof of insurance will still receive a flu shot at no cost. Employees who plan to attend should notify their supervisor. Flu shot clinics on multiple dates and times, and at various campus locations, will be announced soon for employees who work during regular business hours.

Check your route: more Metro Transit route adjustments
Madison Metro has adjusted its redesigned system of bus schedules based on passenger feedback. The new system may be easier and more accessible than before for some UW community members. Employees who use Madison Metro buses should check their routes for any changes. Find details at transportation.wisc.edu.

UW–Madison monitoring extreme heat in Wisconsin
The National Weather Service has forecast extreme heat for Wisconsin this week, including an Excessive Heat Watch from Wednesday morning through Thursday evening. The university remains open for normal business and is taking certain precautions. Should employees feel that they cannot safely work or travel to campus, they can contact their supervisors to make alternate arrangements or take leave, according to the Inclement Weather Policy. Housing move-in and construction projects to affect campus travel
Some campus roads will be one-way only and restricted to residence hall move-in traffic August 27, 30, 31, and September 1. Ongoing construction projects will also affect travel for pedestrians, bikes, buses, and motorists as the fall semester begins. Commuters are advised to expect delays and plan ahead. New professional development offerings for fall 2023
The Office of Strategic Consulting has released the fall 2023 lineup for its Ignite: Fueling Organizational Excellence and In Scope: Managing Projects at UW‒Madison professional development series. The Ignite series is intended for employees who work to create positive change at UW. This fall’s series will center on process improvement methodologies and tactics. Some sessions will be in person and others will be online, with the first session scheduled for September 12. The In Scope series is designed for managers of small- to medium-sized projects at UW and will provide foundational skills to navigate projects more efficiently and effectively. The series begins October 5, and all sessions will be online. There are no fees to participate in either series; registration is required.

2023‒24 parking permit update from Transportation Services
Employees who received a parking permit offer on August 16 must accept on or before August 29. Those who applied for parking and have not yet received an offer are on waitlists. Waitlists are processed approximately every two weeks and offers are emailed when space is available. There is no need to re-apply unless you want to update your lot/permit preferences. Current year ((2022‒23) permits expire August 31 and the new parking year begins on September 1. For more information, go to transportation.wisc.edu.

Nominations open for 2023 Outstanding Women of Color
UW–Madison Outstanding Women of Color Awards honor faculty, staff, students, and members of the community whose advocacy, activism, and/or scholarship have positively transformed their organizations or communities, and whose efforts advance equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging for marginalized populations. Nominations should be submitted by the deadline of Wednesday, Sept. 20, and must include a nomination letter, two letters of support, and the nominee’s curriculum vitae. The Outstanding Women of Color honorees for 2023 will be announced at the annual Diversity Forum on November 15, 2023. Details are available at go.wisc.edu/owoc.

New course provides coaching skills for managers and supervisors
Learning and Talent Development at UW‒Madison is offering a new course for managers and supervisors, Coaching Employees for Retention and Career Development. This three-hour course focuses on coaching employees and engaging them in dialogue about their development and growth. Participants are strongly encouraged to attend the Coaching and Developing Others workshop offered by Learning and Talent Development, or be familiar with the workshop content, before taking this new course. Note that some conversations about career development may involve total reward strategies, such as compensation. This course will not directly address those topics, but will reinforce the resources available to supervisors and managers. The course is offered to UW employees at no cost; registration is required. Conference Call for Proposals deadline approaching
Learning and Talent Development is hosting the annual Leadership and Management Development Conference at Union South on Wednesday, Oct. 18. The conference provides emerging and advanced leaders, as well as those who are not in a direct leadership position, with professional development to enhance their skills and manage more effectively. Proposals are invited from potential speakers who would like to present 75-minute breakout sessions; these can be workshops, panel discussions, or lectures. Criteria for successful proposals and possible topics are available on the conference website. Proposals are due this Friday, August 18. Event registration is also open; the fee, which includes workshops, keynote session, continental breakfast, and lunch, is $135 for UW‒Madison and UW System participants.

Professional development courses help employees manage change
Learning and Talent Development at UW‒Madison offers courses and programs designed to help employees adapt to, manage, and initiate change. Understanding and Leading Change, part of the Fully Prepared to Lead program, provides the skills and tools leaders need to be effective change agents. The next online session is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 13, 9‒11:30 a.m., with additional sessions scheduled for Oct. 3 (in person) and Dec. 5 (online). Thriving in a Time of Change, part of the Thrive@UW program, invites participants to reflect on how change affects them and develop a personal action plan to navigate change. The course will be offered in person on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 9 a.m.‒noon and online on Nov. 2, 1‒4 p.m. Courses are free to all UW‒Madison faculty and staff.
