Applications being accepted for 2024–25 parking permits
Transportation Services is now accepting applications for base lot, Flex, carpool, park and ride, UW Accessible, and business alternate permits. The application deadline for early consideration is May 31, with additional deadlines through the summer. Eligible applicants will be considered automatically for the reduced cost parking program. Bus passes and other parking options will be available starting Aug. 1. The new parking year begins Sept. 1. For more information, including how to apply, visit transportation.wisc.edu.

Construction projects to cause campus-area travel delays this summer
Transportation Services is providing a preview of the construction projects that will affect travel for motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, and buses this summer. Major impacts are expected on University Avenue, W. Johnson Street, Campus Drive, and other campus locations. Dates and traffic configurations are approximate and subject to change. Mentorship resources enhance career development
UW–Madison employees have access to career mentoring communities and other resources to accelerate career development. Mentorship can provide feedback, personalized guidance, and an expanded professional network. A variety of mentorship programs across campus connect mentors and mentees, creating partnerships that support professional growth. Learning and Talent Development also offers a self-paced course for mentors and mentees, Creating Meaningful Mentoring Relationships. All mentorship resources are available to UW employees at no cost.

Showcase Fireside Chat with Provost Isbell available for viewing
At the Office of Strategic Consulting’s Showcase event on April 18, Provost Charles Isbell presented the keynote on “What It Means To Be an Elite Public University for the 21st Century.” In a moderated conversation, Isbell shared his insights on why the university’s current transformation efforts are vital to the future of our research enterprise and how to lean into the changes ahead. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions and hear Provost Isbell’s viewpoints based on his career as a computationalist, researcher, educator, and advocate for access in higher education. The fireside chat is now available for viewing online. In addition, presentation decks are posted for many breakout sessions.

Reminder of deadlines to use personal holiday and vacation carryover
UW–Madison employees are reminded to make plans to use personal holiday hours or vacation carryover by the upcoming deadlines. Faculty, Academic Staff, and Limited Appointees with 12-month (annual basis) appointments must use all carried-over vacation and personal holiday hours by June 30, 2024, the end of the fiscal year. Floating holidays earned on Dec. 24, 2023, and Dec. 31, 2023, must also be used by June 30. For University Staff, all carried-over vacation and all personal holiday hours must be used by December 31, the end of the calendar year. Employees who are eligible to bank leave may do so. Any vacation carryover or personal holiday hours remaining after these respective deadlines will be lost. Leave balances can be found under “Time and Absence” in MyUW. Employees who wish to verify their leave balances and the corresponding deadlines should contact the human resources department in their school, college, or division.

P.B. Poorman award for advocacy on behalf of LGBTQ+ communities seeks nominations
UW–Madison seeks nominations of faculty, staff, students, or community members for the 2024 Universities of Wisconsin Dr. P.B. Poorman Award for Outstanding Achievement on Behalf of LGBTQ+ People. Nominate an LGBTQ+ person or ally whose contributions have improved the climate for or status and visibility of LGBTQ+ people. Nominations must be submitted by Friday, May 17.

Registration open for the 2024 IT Professionals Conference
Registration is now open for the 7th annual IT Professionals Conference on May 30 and 31. The event will feature more than 25 IT-focused sessions, a keynote by Dr. Joe Sanfelippo, the IT Recognition Awards, and more. Attendance may be virtual or hybrid (May 30 in person at the Pyle Center and May 31 via Zoom). Food is included on May 30 for hybrid conference registrants. Register by May 21 to attend in person.

Donations can help Partners in Giving reach $2 million
The Partners in Giving 2023 Awards Ceremony, held March 5, honored volunteers who did outstanding work to support the campaign and campus units that made strides to increase participation. Organizers also announced that the campaign had raised $1,934,303 up to that point. The campaign is still shy of reaching the $2 million goal. There is still time to give to support the wider community in need through a diverse variety of charities. Visit giving.wi.gov to donate through May 14.

Transportation Services announces 2024–25 parking rates and program changes
There will be no increase in parking rates for the upcoming parking year, which runs September 1, 2024 through August 31, 2025. Rates for the Madison Metro employee bus pass, Flex parking, and visitor parking will not increase, and the reduced cost parking program will continue. Information about applying for the 2024–25 parking year will be announced in early May. For more information, visit transportation.wisc.edu.

U.S. Department of Labor announces change to Fair Labor Standards Act
The U.S. Department of Labor has increased the salary threshold for the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to $844 per week or $43,888 per year for a full-year worker. Employees whose salaries fall below the new threshold must be paid hourly, report hours worked, and be compensated for overtime pay unless they qualify for a threshold exemption. Only employees with salaries above the threshold may be designated as salaried or “exempt” from overtime pay. The new rules go into effect July 1, 2024. UW–Madison employees who are impacted by this change will be contacted directly and provided with additional information in the coming months.
