  • Road Closures and Detours Starting May 16

    Upcoming construction projects will cause lane closures on Charter Street, Walnut Street, and University Avenue/University Bay Drive starting the week of May 16. The closures will impact vehicles, bicycles, buses, and pedestrians traveling to and from campus. Additional construction projects will impact campus transportation this summer.   • New Website Highlights Accessibility Resources

    A new website, Accessibility@UW–Madison, provides the university community with the information needed to design an accessible environment and help ensure equal access to programs, services, and events for people with disabilities. The website includes a full range of resources for faculty, students, and staff. Links to training and guides are provided for those who wish to help create a more inclusive university. Guidelines are also provided for creating accessible digital content and planning accessible events. The website is available at accessible.wisc.edu.

  • Reminder of Deadlines to Use Certain Leave Balances

    UW–Madison employees are reminded to use personal holiday hours or vacation carryover by the upcoming deadlines. Faculty, Academic Staff, and Limited Appointees with 12-month (annual basis) appointments must use all carried-over vacation and personal holiday hours by June 30, 2022, the end of the fiscal year. Floating holidays earned on Dec. 25, 2021, and Jan. 1, 2022, must also be used by June 30. For University Staff, all carried-over vacation and all personal holiday hours must be used by December 31, the end of the calendar year. Employees who are eligible to bank leave may do so. Any vacation carryover or personal holiday hours remaining after these respective deadlines will be lost. Leave balances can be found under “Time and Absence” in MyUW at my.wisc.edu.

  • Chancellor Finalists Visiting This Week

    Five finalists for the position of chancellor at UW–Madison are visiting campus this week to meet with and answer questions from the campus community. Three remaining sessions are scheduled for May 4–6 at various locations and times. UW–Madison employees may attend the sessions in paid status, with supervisor permission, if the sessions fall during normal work hours. During their visits, finalists will also interview with the Special Regent Committee and interim UW System President Michael Falbo, as well as other campus stakeholder groups, including shared governance representatives, students, faculty, and deans.   • Women and Leadership Symposium Provides Professional Development

    The UW–Madison Women and Leadership Symposium will take place on Wednesday, June 1, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. at Union South. The keynote speaker will be Joseline Nyinawabera, MBA ’22. Nyinawabera is the founder of BlkBld & Co., a boutique marketing firm that helps black-owned businesses grow and scale. She will speak about building an authentic and strong personal brand. Attendees can also choose from breakout sessions on topics such as leadership, networking, career resilience, mentoring, cultivating happiness, strategic self-promotion, facilitating conversations around race and difference, male advocacy in the workplace, and more. The event is open to anyone interested in women’s advancement. The conference fee is $75 for UW–Madison faculty, staff, and students. The registration deadline is Wednesday, May 18.

  • Nominations Open for IT Recognition Awards

    Nominations are now being accepted for the 2022 IT Recognition Awards. Information and technology professionals across campus are eligible to receive these awards. Award categories include diversity, equity and inclusion; community engagement; team achievement; lifetime achievement; transformational achievement; Rising Star; and Unsung Hero. Detailed descriptions of each award category are available online. Awards will be presented as part of the IT Professionals Conference on June 3, 2022.   • Reminder to Complete Staff Climate Survey by May 3

    UW–Madison employees who have not yet completed the 2022 Staff Climate Survey are encouraged to do so by the May 3 deadline. Permanent academic staff, university staff, limited appointees who do not hold a faculty appointment, and post-docs received a link to the survey in an email on Tuesday, April 12 (search your email for “Staff Climate Survey”). The survey includes questions about workplace environment, work unit, relationship with one’s supervisor, remote work policy, and more, and takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. The UW Survey Center is administering the survey. Responses are confidential and will never be shared in a way that could identify individual respondents.   • Nominations Open for Outstanding Achievement on Behalf of LGBTQ+ People

    UW–Madison is seeking nominations for faculty, staff, students, or community members for the 2022 UW System Dr. P.B. Poorman Award for Outstanding Achievement on Behalf of LGBTQ+ People. The award recognizes LGBTQ+ people or their allies who have contributed in the following ways: their advocacy, activism, or scholarship has fostered social justice and organizational change; they have created positive transformation within their institutions and/or the community to achieve the goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion; and /or their efforts are improving the climate for, or status and visibility of, LGBTQ+ people. The deadline to submit a nomination is Saturday, April 30.

  • Outside Employment Reporting for University Staff

    UW–Madison University Staff employees are not prohibited from accepting outside employment, provided that the outside employment does not interfere with their duties to the university. The Board of Regents Code of Ethics policy prohibits University Staff employees from accepting outside employment that causes a conflict of interest with their university employment. If a University Staff member is considering or is currently working an additional job outside the UW, they need to self-determine if the outside job duties are in conflict with their UW job duties. In these situations, employees should provide details about the outside employment to their supervisor. The supervisor will let the employee know if they are able to start or continue with the outside employment.   • Masks Now Optional on Madison Metro Transit

    The federal mask mandate for public transportation is no longer in effect following a court ruling. Effective immediately, masks are optional for Madison Metro Transit passengers, including campus bus routes. For details, visit cityofmadison.com.
